Eligibility, Funding & Overseas Students

Eligibility

We welcome applications from students who:

  • Hold (or expect to be awarded) a relevant degree at the highest level.
  • Have achieved a UK II.i Honours Degree (If your degree is not from the UK, please check International Qualifications to find your country's equivalent).
  • Have a passion for scientific research.

Financial Support

Wellcome Studentship

Wellcome provide 4 years of funding for:

  • University & College Fees at the Home/EU rate*
  • A generous stipend
  • Funding for research consumables
  • Funding for skills training
  • A contribution towards travel/conference attendance.

*Funding does not include 'Overseas fees' for International students. The Cambridge Commonwealth, European & International Trust can supplement funding for successful international candidates to cover the difference between UK/EU and international fees. To apply for this, tick the relevant funding box in your studentship application.

MRC 'Physical Biology of Stem Cells' Programme

The Medical Research Council only fund University tuition fees at the 'Home' rate. EU applicants may be eligible to receive a 'Fees only' award. Full details of the MRC Student Eligibility Requirements can be found at https://www.ukri.org/files/legacy/publications/rcuk-training-grant-guide-pdf/

The studentship amount awarded to 'Home' students, will be at the Wellcome-rate/headers listed above.

International Students

We welcome applications from both UK/EU and non-EU (international) candidates.

Fees for International Students

At the University there are two tiers of fees in place:

  • 'Home' rate: Applicable to students from the UK and EU countries (plus one or two others)
  • 'Overseas' rate: International students who don't qualify for the 'Home' rate.

Wellcome provide full studentship funding at the 'Home' (UK/EU) rate. International students will receive the same funding rate from Wellcome, but will need to apply to the 'Cambridge Trust' to cover the additional 'Overseas Fees'. To do this, please tick the relevant box in your studentship application to "apply for additional funding". If you intend to apply for a funding award to cover your oversees fee, please check the application deadline for each scheme - some of them have deadlines that fall earlier than the studentship application deadline.

To find out which you qualify as and to view the current fees, please visit http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/finance/fees/what-my-fee-status and http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/blscpdscb/finance.

Please note that these funding awards are very competitive, with many more applicants than awards available. You should not therefore rely upon success in these competitions and should investigate other sources of funding (outside of Cambridge) too. The Cambridge Stem Cell Institute is not involved in any way in the decision process for any of these funding awards.

Language Requirement

International students may be required to complete a language test before being made a formal offer, further details can be found here.
