Last week it was announced that Professor Bertie Göttgens has been appointed as Director of Wellcome-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute (CSCI) in January 2022.
“In addition to his outstanding science, spanning several disciplines and tissues, Bertie has been a pillar of strength for the Institute,” wrote Professor Tony Green, current Director of CSCI, in his announcement. “I am confident that, under his leadership, the Institute will go on from strength to strength.”
Professor Göttgens has almost 30 years of experience and holds degrees from Tübingen University and University of Oxford. His haematology research studies how blood cells develop, and how mutations in stem/progenitor cells can cause leukaemia.
Prior to this role he served as Deputy Director in the CSCI, and will continue as a Professor of Molecular Haematology with the University of Cambridge, a position he has held since 2011.
On his new role, Professor Göttgens commented:

I want to say a big thank you to my predecessors Austin Smith and Tony Green, who have made enormous contributions to making the Institute the very special place that it is today. While there will no doubt be challenges as we move forward, I am convinced that the Institute with its wider Cambridge ecosystem will be able to adapt and flourish to fulfil our mission of transforming human health through a deep understanding of stem cell biology.”
