How to Apply

How To Apply

All applicants must submit our departmental application form as detailed below:

  • Step 1: Check that you are eligible for MRC funding
  • Step 2: Download the Application Form <<available here in Oct/Nov>>
  • Step 3: Upload your completed Departmental Application Form, your current Curriculum Vitae, and copy of your Degree Transcripts to the department application site <<available here in Oct/Nov>>

*Tip: If you have more than one transcript to upload, please combine these into one PDF - each upload boxes will only accept one document.

  • Step 4: Contact your two named referees, and ask them to email their reference letters to  by the application deadline above, quoting 'Wellcome Trust PhD' in the subject header.
  • Step 5 (Overseas applicants only): Overseas applicants wanting to apply for any of the Cambridge Scholarships to cover their overseas fees, will also need to complete an application through the University's Applicant Portal. 


Important Notes:

  • All applicants must submit the departmental application form via our application site (as detailed above). Applications received by email will not be accepted.
  • The MRC only funds University tuition fees at the home rate i.e. to UK candidates. Please therefore check that you meet the MRC funding eligibility requirements here before submitting an application.
  • 'Home' students do not need to submit an application to the University Applicant Portal at this stage.
  • Applicants wanting to apply for the any of the Cambridge Scholarships to cover their 'Overseas Fees', will need to complete an application via the University's new Applicant Portal, as well as our departmental application form. Please note the earlier deadlines for these funding calls.

If you do not hear from us by 3 weeks after the application closing date, please assume that you have not been shortlisted.


  • Reference letters must be provided by the referee themselves and should be signed, and on headed paperReferences submitted by applicants will not be accepted. 
  • References submitted after the deadline may not be accepted.
  • Both the University Applicant Portal system and our Departmental application process require references from your referees, so to clarify, you will need to ask your referees to supply them twice.  For the Departmental application references process, see 'Step 4' above; if you are also applying through the University Applicant Portal, you can request your references direct from within the Portal.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that your references have been received.
