History of the Institute

The University of Cambridge Stem Cell Initiative is established by academics studying stem cells and related topics.

Professor Austin Smith establishes the Wellcome Trust Centre for Stem Cell Research (CSCR). Together with the MRC Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine (now the Anne McLaren LRM), led by Professor Roger Pedersen, the two centres constitute twin bases for stem cell research in the University of Cambridge’s School of Biological Sciences and School of Clinical Medicine. 

Wellcome Trust and MRC unite to invest in Cambridge Stem Cell Institute with Professor Austin Smith as Director. This comes as a result of CSCR and LRM combining their Wellcome Trust, MRC, and University of Cambridge funding to become the Wellcome Trust-Medical Research Council Cambridge Stem Cell Institute.

Professor Tony Green is instated as Director of the Institute.

The Institute moves into the purpose-built Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, bringing Group Leaders together into a united research space.

Professor Bertie Göttgens is instated as Director of the Institute.

The Institute name changes to simply the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute (CSCI). CSCI receives funding from Wellcome to operate a Discovery Research Platform for Tissue Scale Biology under the Institute.
