Speakers / Discussion hosts: Prof. Matthias Zilbauer & Dr. Jo. Jones
Lunch will be provided for seminar attendees after the session from 13:00 – please REGISTER ONLINE if you plan to attend this discussion so we can cater for accurate numbers.
This open discussion will aim to cover the following:
- How we define ‘unexpected’ results (at what point does a result become unexpected vs. an assay/experiment is failing)
- How to report unexpected findings, what are the options
- Ethical considerations for sharing ‘unexpected’ results
- Conflict of interest – potential impact on ability to publish unexpected results (e.g. clinical trial)
- Unexpected data/findings – to publish or not?
The traditional pressure to only publish "positive" results can stifle innovation and create a skewed view of scientific progress. But at the Institute, we believe in the power of transparency and the importance of every finding—even the ones that don't go as planned. We want to celebrate the courage it takes to share an unexpected result, because we know that this kind of open, honest conversation is what truly drives science forward.
