Wellcome-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute

Biography

Matt graduated from the University of Oxford with an degree in Biological Sciences in 2019. Following this, he joined the Wellcome Trust 1+3 PhD programme in Stem Cell Biology and Medicine at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. Matt's PhD is in George Vassiliou's group and focuses on the molecular mechanisms driving the clonal expansion of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in the early stages of myeloid malignancy. He uses in vitro models and primary patient samples combined with multi-omics and functional assays to understand how mutations in splicing factor genes alter HSC behaviour and can lead some forms of blood cancer.

Matt is also an active member and former chair of the department's sustainability team (Green Impact) and acts as postgraduate student representative on the School of Clinical Medicine's Climate and Sustainability Action Group.
