Nicole Mende's submission received first place prize in the ISEH New Investigator Awards (Postdoctoral Fellow category 2021).
Mende is a Post-doc researcher based here at the Wellcome-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, in Principal Investigator Elisa Laurenti's Lab. She has received the New Investigator Award Winner for her top scoring abstract – 'Integrated single cell analysis identifies unique molecular and functional features of extramedullary haematopoiesis in humans'.
The International Society for Experimental Hematology (ISEH) was established in 1950 by a group of scientists who sought to create a forum for the presentation and discussion of pre-clinical data in experimental hematology. ISEH continues to be dedicated to the promotion of the scientific knowledge and clinical application of basic hematologic and immunologic disorders through research, publications, and scientific programs.
Nicole comments on her award:

Nicole Mende and Dr. Laurenti have recently collaborated on a review published in Experimental Hematology. The review is titled, 'Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells outside the bone marrow: where, when and why'. In the paper, Mende summarises all the current evidence and discusses how close we are to answering some of these questions.
Nicole Mende comments further on the review:
“Haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells outside the bone marrow are still very much a black box. So we ask: Which role do they play? Are these cells different between mice and humans? Is there untapped clinical relevance that can be unlocked by studying them?”
